With every addiction it's a good idea to look at what it is you're trying to self medicate yourself from and try to find some way to deal with it. It's not easy, but the chemical nicotine addiction is the minor problem. It's all the emotional stuff connected with it that's hard to deal with.

All of us have behaviour to try to reduce pain or difficult situations. Not all of those methods are healthy or constructive. They say that the best way of getting rid of a negative behaviour pattern is to replace it with a healthier one.
The thing you choose to replace the cigarettes with is entirely up to you, as long as it's not destructive.

I have talked to some people who managed to quit, and they told me what they replaced their addiction with. I hope this helps.

One woman had tried all her life to avoid responsibility, she thought any kind of responsibility would take away her freedom. She abdicated from her own life leaving important decisions to other people. Naturally she was taken advantage of. Whenever she felt threatened and had to make a decision she would smoke. She quit smoking by using patches, and by realising that having to constantly run away meant that she wasn't free. She realised she was in fact a slave to other people and random circumstances. She had tried to quit using patches many times before, but it wasn't until she decided to take responsibility for her own life that quitting worked for her. She's excited about life in a whole new way, now that it's hers again.

Another person was smoking because she was afraid of gaining weight if she quit. It wasn't until someone pointed out that smoking ages your skin and makes you look a lot older that she managed to quit. Her vanity was her saviour there. Instead she discovered Botox. I'm not so sure that was better.

I know people who replaced smoking with Yoga, religion or psychotherapy and managed to quit after that. One person quit smoking after receiving acupuncture treatment; another tried hypnosis and managed to quit. One writes poetry instead, that's a way for her to express and deal with emotions - inability to deal with emotions was the reason she smoked. It helped to numb her. Another person I know has started to meditate as a way to handle stress, which was the reason he smoked. He said he quit smoking after his first breathing exercise.

I'm sure there are as many ways to quit as there are people. You just need to see what it is that smoking gives you and try to find something that can do this for you in a healthier way. Patches and pills might help you on your way, but they alone are not the answer.
